Office desk shuffle

For the past couple weeks, we've slowly been getting the guest bedroom/office organized and decorated. A couple weekends ago we put up curtains and bought a futon cover. This past weekend while I was at Pier 1 looking for throw pillows, I ended up finding a desk that fit the space perfectly.

Previously -- as in more than a year ago -- I bought a desk on Craigslist that I thought had good DIY potential. It had good bones, it just needed some paint and new knobs, and it was a steal. There were two problems though: 1) Even after a year, I still had not had the motivation to re-finish it, and 2) It was not quite big enough to be a comfortable working desk for my home office and photography business. As a result, I'd been keeping an eye out for a bigger desk, yet not too big (the guest bedroom/office is only 9'x12' and has to fit a futon as well!) as well as aesthetically pleasing.. and oh yeah, under $200.

Like I said, I found the desk at Pier 1, and last night Matt and I assembled it and put in the guest bedroom/office. But before we put in the new desk, we had to move the old one to another location in the house.

Here's a photo of desk and futon in the guest bedroom:

Note: Ignore the new desk sitting in the box and the futon cover that's not yet on the mattress.

We decided to move the old desk to the sitting area in the room on the way to the master bedroom.
Above left:  This photo was taken from the top of the staircase looking to the front of the house.  This was the room that was originally the walkthrough bedroom in which a full bathroom was constructed.  Behind the entryway to the left (wall opposite of the desk wall) is Matt's closet.  The bathroom is behind the middle wall, and the door in the distance is the door to the master bedrom.

Above right:  The old desk and old chair!  I also bought this old chair at a thrift store (the white price sticker is still on the back, oops) with hopes of reupholstering the cushion.  Like the desk, I have not refinished the chair yet.  Matt kept this old Phish poster around with hopes of putting it up on some wall, but I don't think it matches the rest of the home decor, so we compromised and I figure he can rest the poster on the desk for now until we figure out what to do next with this desk.

As for the new desk.... it was fairly easy to assemble!  Matt and I concluded that Pier 1 assembly was way better than Ikea assembly.  I wasn't able to take an all-inclusive photo of the room in one shot, so I took multiple shots and pieced them together so that you could get a feel for the room.  Not all of the photos line up perfectly, but you can still get a feel for it!

Overall, I think the room is really coming together!  I still want to put up some wall decorations and perhaps some sort of shelving near the desk for storage.  I also stole the chair from the old desk for this photo, so another item on the wishlist is an armed desk chair.  Also missing from the desk is something very important: a computer.  I actually snagged a great deal on a laptop and monitor over Thanksgiving's Cyber Monday but wanted to wait until the office space was further along before setting it up.  I think I'm pretty close to being good to go, and so when I get the official workspace set up, I'll write another update!

Until then, have a great New Year's celebration!  :)  So long until 2011!
